Wild Food Season is here!

Spring certainly seems to have sprung here in Scotland and, most exciting, we gathered some wild garlic in the woods yesterday! We made pesto for lunch, recipe here.  You can also make soup.

Nettles are also beginning to poke their new green growth through the earth. We have two soup recipes for those here.

And before you know it, it’ll be time for the dandelion pancakes!

Frugal Living end of January ’15 update

Well, it’s still super icy and wintery here as you can see. What better way to warm up than with our new lasagne recipe? It can be gluten free and veggie and is totally delicious and frugal!

The Days Out and Holidays page has been updated with Trivago and Lowcost Holidays for holiday and hotel comparison and also Discount London for tickets and sightseeing deals.

Just 99 is new to the Household Tips section, it’s an online 99p shop.

January 2015 update

Happy 2015 to you All! It got off to a frosty start here. Welcome to our new mailing list format, we hope it’s an improvement for everyone. An alternative is to subscribe to the blog, you can see the signup form on the left-hand sidebar of any page of the site.

We will be archiving newsletters here from now on. You can sign up to the email version on the contact page or at the bottom of this post.

vegetable fritters

Ingredients:
1 cup of gram (chick pea) flour – some supermarkets do stock this
1 cup of water
a little salt
a teaspoon of chopped coriander or half a teaspoon of curry powder (both optional)
sunflower oil for shallow frying
2 cups of vegetables of your choice broken or chopped into desired size – for example brocolli or cauliflour florets, celery chunks, onion rings etc.

Beat the flour and water together with the salt and coriander until a smooth batter is formed. Heat the oil in a large frying pan. Dip the vegetables in the batter and then fry for about 5 minutes turning once. Nice served with oven chips or rice and a big green salad and mayo.
